On The Bubble #5 - Rarity Matters...
Posted On: 10/18/2007 08:21:25

This is just a short wee blog because I've had a mini-brainwave. I have a great idea for a seperate full-length blog which I will be implementing this evening hopefully.

In the mean time... Why couldn't WotC print cards that care about the rarity of other cards? How about something like this....

Common Sense   1U

Uncommon

Instant

Counter target common spell.

or

Rare Kill  1B (crap card name I know)

Uncommon

Instant

Destroy target rare creature.

Now I'm not a card designer or templater so apologies if there are any obvious mistakes here. And I know there are some small corner cases where you have a card which exists in two rarites such as Loxodon Warhammer or the like. I'm fairly certain the rules could be flexed to mitigate any problems such as Warhammer in Extended. Perhaps just make the official rarity of the card it's latest printing irrespective of the rarity of the printed card used? That's maybe not the ideal solution but I'm sure smarter peeople than me could figure a way round the issue of a very small subset of cards.

Is there something really obvious I which I am missing here? This kind of stuff has already kinda happened before during Kamagawa with 'Legend matters' cards.

Magic: The Gathering

I'm not really sure what I'm trying to do with this blog. I just wanted to put an idea out there and hear your opinions. It appears to be to be a completely untouched area of design space. Or have I missed a really small selection of cards from before my time? Let me know.

I think this could be delicious with a set where the actual storyline was based on class devisions... like a kafka set(tries very hard to keep a straight face)
I think I'm going to work on this actually...

DOWN WITH THE BOURGIESZZ((failed french history... spelling is as such))

Was that double entendre intended Robin?

I couldn't agree more. If Rosewater has demonstrated one thing it is that he is unwilling to leave any virgin untouched.

I don't think that it's out of the question. They made Rare-Be-Gone (sic.) in Unhinged, and in the past other cards/mechanics have made the transition to non-silver border. I would rate this as a 20-30% possibility of happening with "rarity matters" within the next five years.

Yeah, it's probably not worth all the hassle to be honest. I thought there must be a hole in my logic somewhere, and it has been found :)

Still, like I said before, seems such a shame that all that virgin design space has to be left untouched.

It could still be exploited if someone wanted to go through gatherer and official designate older cards using the newer definitions. It would be a pretty major undertaking, and even then playing with or against them would require even more extensive knowledge of the card base than playing the eternal formats already does.

Ahhhh right. I can see how that would be an issue. Could they not just print them and then make them non-legal for formats older than Extended?

Ach, I guess not. I'm sure someone at WotC would have done it already if it was as simple as that. Like I say, I thought I was maybe missing something. Seems a shame though because it would be such an interesting area of design space to exploit.

The main problem as it currently stands is that the card would be hell on Vintage and Legacy tournament judges. Cards printed before... I want to say Exodus did not have the black/silver/gold rarity distinction in the set symbol. Plus there was the period when they didn't have rares, but "uncommon 1-3."
