More Lorwyn Speculation
Posted On: 09/11/2007 12:04:45

Mark Rosewater left us with his customary set of teasers on his Monday column: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=mtgcom/daily/mr296

Here are the teasers:

  • the next evolution of a popular cycle from Mirage
  • a 10/2 creature for 3 ManaRed Mana (okay, there might be another cost)
  • a green enchantment that can keep the 10/2 from hurting you
  • a cycle of creatures that lets you use a resource first seen in Unglued
  • a card that makes all your Treefolk indestructible (I know you already know it; it's still cool)
  • a white answer for any bothersome nonland permanent
  • a Shapeshifter lord
  • an artifact that lets you play spells for free
  • lands that provide two colors of mana and can come into play untapped
  • and a card that finally cares about Goats

I'm going to pull out a few of these for speculation.

1) "the next evolution of a popular cycle from Mirage" The first mirage cycle that springs to mind is the oft imitated "Charm" cycle. While this is always a possibility we've seen charms pretty recently (in TSB and PLC sets). Given the nature of this set as a tribal block my wild guess is that we'll see something along the lines of the "Spirit of the Night" cycle - creatures that can Voltron into something larger.

2) "a green enchantment that can keep the 10/2 from hurting you" Barbed foliage was one of my favorite cards in Mirage block - especially sealed. Perhaps we could see a more focused iteration? Doing two damage to one attacking creature rather than one to all attackers? Alternatively it may prevent attacks completely from some sources a la moat. A reverse moat (fliers may not attack) would certainly be in keeping with the reach mechanic the green is famed for.

3) "lands that provide two colors of mana and can come into play untapped" So the question is: which of the Future Sight dual cycles will make its full appearance in Lorwyn? Grove of the burnwillows and River of Tears" seem to be the prime candidates to me based on flavor text. River of Tears was my gut choice but the flavor seems like it might be more in line with the next mini-block than Lorwyn, still I'm going with the River. Interestingly assuming one of the FUT cycles is expanded that means one color combination is short a dual land in standard.

4) "a cycle of creatures that lets you use a resource first seen in Unglued" I bring this up for brainstorming help because I wracked my brain an couldn't think of what Rosewater could be referring to. But then I was relying on wikipedia and gatherer searchses to try and tract down this clue as I've held all of one unglued card in my life. The term "resource" is odd enough that I don't think it is something as simple as more "enchant player" cards (that debuted in unglued and were subsequently printed in TSP and FUT).

MaidenGames already pointed out 1, so I'll take a gander at 3:

I'm going to go on record, here and now, and say that I will eat my Hallowed Fountains if any of the Future Sight duals are reprinted in Lorwyn. The rasoning? MaRo's wording: "lands that provide two colors of mana and can come into play untapped" Can, not do. That means some clause or restriction, much like the Ravnica duals. None of the Future Sight lands can come into play tapped, so he would simply have said "that come into play untapped." Considering the theme of the set, it'll probably be something creature related. Races seem to be set in two colours, so it makes a fair bit of sense. "When this comes into play, if you control a [creature type], untap [card name]." That'd be a good way to push creatures, though it seems a little underpowered. "When this comes into play, reveal a [creature type] in your hand. If you do, untap [card name]," is the only other way I can think to make a creature-based dual land without unecessary complexity, but that would probably be too good. The last thing we need is aggro decks with real duals.

It seems today it was confirmed that the cycle of charms is what has evolved from Mirage.  A four cost version that lets you choose two effects is intriguing and I look forward to playing these cards.  As for Secluded Glen, I agree, that sounds more GW than anything else or, at this point with Elves being BG, a BG land type. It'll be interesting to see where this goes

#6 -- Do you think that White is really pushing into the RFG effect for removal?  Seems like a better RFG card than Mangara of Corondor (which is pretty nice as is).  I'm looking forward to this card, since the more removal that white can find, the better that color will become.

Elves have been confirmed as the G/B race for Lorwyn

@ Maiden Games - I've seen that, and its makes sense to some degree - but I'm skeptical. For one the "spoiled" name is Secluded Glen - but its UB - that sounds GW to me? The spoiler also mentions a GB one for treefolk and most of the rumors have centered around Elves being GB. IF there is even a GB "race" since all the races confirmed as mutilcolor are allied color races.

Anyway - it would be a cool take on lands and would solve the problem of leaving a color combo "out" a dual land in the standard environment if one of the FS cycle is expanded.

I really hope it's not rolling dice...that would be so lame.

What do you think about the "at the beginning of next game" rule from unglued?  Might be fun.

1.  I like your way of thinking.  The Spirit of the Night hadn't occurred to me and seems like a natural choice for Lorwyn.  The problem is the word "cycle".  This leads me to believe it will be the cycle of Instant Auras like Grave Servitude and Armor of Thorns.  According to their current oracle wording these cards gain Substance if not played as a sorcery, lose Substance at the end of the turn and get sacrificed if they don't have Substance.  The next evolution of this would be either a mechanic that removes the necessity for this clunky wording or a reworking of the whole substance thing.  Time will tell I guess.

2. I got nothing, your guess is better than mine.

3. This was answered recently on mtgsalvation.com.  They come into play tapped unless you reveal a card of a particular race (Elf, Fairy, Merfolk, ect).

4.  Looking back at Unglued I remember a few cards that could be the one mentioned.  The resources they speak of are Naming a Card in an opponents hand (Denied!), revealing the top card of an opponents library (Psychic Network), utilizing any kind of counters on cards you control (Hungry Hungry Heifer), or revealing a particular card from your hand (Infernal Spawn of Evil).  I highly doubt they'll be using coin flipping or dice rolling.  He might be reaching when he says "a cycle of creatures that lets you use a resource first seen in Unglued".  Once again, your guess is better than mine.

@ JeremyFuentes - I hadn't thought of it like that, but Rosewater's wording doesn't rule it out.

@ - svachalek - I think you are probably right, but what I meant by "shorted" is that say River of Tears is reprinted in a cycle. Now UB would still just have Underground River and River of Tears as their Duals. But G/W would now get Brushland, Horizon Canopy, and whatever its River of Tears equivalent would be.

09/12/2007 12:47:17

I think if they expand a FUT cycle they will reprint the original card with the same name and a normal (not "futuristic" border) which should prevent anybody from getting shorted.  But more importantly, will I get to play Goat tribe ftw?
