Classroom X - Ordealing With Zoo

Classroom X – Ordealing with the Zoo

This is the second installment of Classroom X. These articles are the product of the extreme casual environment of Dan Eckstein’s classroom. Dan (or Mr. X) is a math teacher in a small town in Southwest Missouri. Between location and family Dan rarely gets to play other than across the desk after school with his students. As a result he gets to play with any weird deck he comes up with.

Last week we looked at a Deck that was designed around Bitter Ordeal. The concept was pretty simple use the Invasion sac lands and some other sacable’s to play a Bitter Ordeal with a high Gravestorm count. Use that removal to hit key valuable cards out of the opponents decks.

Last week we showed how easy it was to play through the counters and hit a control deck in the jewels leaving it helpless and worthless. At that time RoninX commented about our game against agro which is the toughest match for this deck.

So to be fair the students and I decided that we should also show you our match up vs. Zoo. By the way Goblins is almost an auto loss so we didn’t want to waste your time there.

The deck we used was Gauntlet Zoo by Steve Nagy which we got from a top 8 PTQ list.

If you are unfamiliar with it here it is.

These games actually came out a little better than our overall testing. Bitter has about a 65 to 70% game against Zoo. The mana base is just too weak to removal. I may still post some games against mono red (Which is a disaster for Bitter) and Dredge (which is kind of interesting a really skill intensive.)

Thanks for the posts. This deck is fun but for the casual only. If falls way short against Goblins and worse against dredge. Good luck though. Let me know.

Hi Dan,
As I promised you in my post, here I'm.
Hello everybody, I'm from Spain and I must apologize for my poor english.
As I commented you, I think this deck is very interesting, at least it seems to me and I really like.
But I've the next doubt:
When you play Better Ordeal, you consider that the gravestorm's effect occurs for each permanent going to all graveyard, however, and you correct me if I'm wrong, I think this effect its triggered for each permanent going to a only graveyard.
Can this be so?
Anyway I think this deck is very good. This weekend I will test it in my city and I will say you its result.
I tell you later any modification, maybe any creature in the sideboard.

Good point on the over aggressive play. The students are typical teens that throw everything they can into it. To be honest we've done the slow play and results come out stronger. Notice in the Hand 1 Zoo barely got there. With the huge number of wishes and the ability to sustain a high land count without sacrificing anything we can reestablish much master for future acts.

Sideboard
1 Bitter
1 Balance
1 Thoughtseize
1 Damnation
1 Wildfire - really cool when you pull it off
1 Obliterate - Take that Blue mage
4 Persecute - comes in on the MONO colored games. Thoughtseize is out.
The rest is still open for discussion. Have used Stone Rain some.

65% - 70% is a great overall matchup score, and frankly it seems like you are hitting the key components pretty regularly in your testing. That said, it seems like the Zoo player was playing into the balancing act a little too much. In particular, since your strategy revolves around denying them their mana base, there is no real reason to play out past two land. Play a couple of creatures and put on pressure and then wait until your opponent is forced to (balancing) act. Sure, you'll end up discarding a couple of cards, but it didn't look like the Bitter player was regularly emptying their hand.

All in all, that is still a pretty interesting result. It seems that your strengths are good and you have some coverage for some of your weaknesses, but disruption could be a major problem. Basically, this sounds like those other extended "combo" decks TEPS and Enduring, which isn't bad company to be in.

Sideboard thoughts?
