Girls in Magic
Posted On 05/07/2008 03:12:05 by spiffykyote - Read 1014 time(s)

Being a girl in the Magic world is tough. Oh sob story oh woe-is-me yes however it is true. As a girl you have only a few choices as far as I see it. You can fulfill the stereotypes and be a mediocre player that's just around for eye candy, has her one deck that someone else made for her, and probably just is not into the game. There is also the option of just not being capable of procuring anything other than those mediocre decks and being left to getting tossed around as the unwanted player in the shop. Lastly, there is the girl with potential who can do it like the guys can. ('Nuff said about that last one.)

It may seem harsh, but these evaluations hold strong in my personal experience- not that I am really trying to insult anyone with these judgements. What I am curious about though is whether or not male players like to see female players in the game- whether they prefer their girls to be face beaters or face beaten. Hell, there are lots of other games that I could ask the very same question of: Is Halo 3 better on Live when experienced with a girl on your team or is it strictly a guy thing? Is it better if she throws the best stickies or if she's just part of your Killtastic?

In this my first blog post I wanted to get it out of the way and let everyone know that I am a girl who plays Magic and that this is where these perspectives are coming from. I am mostly the "potential" type of player in that I hold my own ground and seem to have a pretty good track record, but I am trying really hard to not get an ego about it. I just want to write, play, learn, and draft right next to everyone else. If it turns out that being a girl makes every step of the way a little more special, then so be it, a little attention is kind of nice. That is the whole reason to blog- this perspective is so rarely heard of that I have yet to find anything myself and that is why I want to start writing about Magic in the hopes that I can get out there and write what people haven't read before.

And yes, I understand I am not the first, I am not the best, but the idea is that someday I could be and whether I'm mana flooded or mana screwed it's still best two out of three and just like any other player I could pull the rest of the match right out of my ass.

And now that we are past the introductions I will start to write a little less fluff and a little more stuff. I have lots of subject matter that can be shared such as lots of combos including Grinning Ignus(FS) and Painter's Servant(SHM) (not together of course). Why more hasn't been written about either one of them is beyond me but I fully expect that since Painter's Servant is still a new card more will come from him. I also aim on making a deck that puts Oona, Queen of the Fae in the spotlight instead of just a "why not" card. There are other plans in the works for future blogs like what I find to be the staples of Shadowmoor in draft or any other format, and so it remains to be seen where I might go with all of this, but hopefully I can keep up and make continuous posts that someone out there will find interesting.

So tell me, how did I do? Too pretentious?

Thanks
so far for the feedback guys, I am glad that my first post is going
over well. I'm lucky when it comes to my store in that the shop owner
is a good guy, we have a wide range of players all week, and that every
draft continues to present skilled players. Mind you, it is of course
still a stink-hole, but they have an apple air freshener by the door
(at least they know it's a stink hole).

Also I am glad it has been said that A Magic player is a Magic player. Having
been going to the same shop for the last seven months, that is how I am
treated and it's a great environment to test out decks. Funny enough
one of them was the Enchanted Scorn deck with some of my personal
touches, but that was before I even read a lot of the posts on here
about the deck. I had to use proxies for half of the cards last week
since SHM wasn't out just yet. But hey, I will save that for a full
blog post (including test play-by-plays).

I don't know, like most boys, I act all stupid and trying the impress the girl I'm playing.

Unlike most boys, I also have a very devoted girlfriend.

But
believe me, I treat girls like another magic player, someone you want
to grow, learn, play, and get better, it's no fun when your community
doesn't grow with you.

As a girl, you may be out of luck such
that guys will always flirt with you and all you want to do is play.
Look for a nice guy that treats you just like another player and work
with them. Cause all the other boys are just gonna want to hit on you
and nothing else.

Best of luck, let us know how it goes

I have yet to meet a girl who, by her own volition, wished to become a skilled magic player independent of others. Pretty much all of them I have met were the gf of a guy who was in the tournament. I honestly would be happy to see more girls in the game because of it increases the game's legitimacy, but feel that it's not realistic in it's current form.

Great first blog. It's definitely opened up an interesting topic for discussion

Also, some of the top Halo pros in the world are girls.

My guess is that a lot of girls would rather not hang out in the stink-filled, holed-up t-shirt wearing, socially-inept community we call the "local game store".  If your store is better then that, then more power to you, but it actually took me about 3-4 stores in the area until I found one where I could move freely, breathe easily, and play cards without having to worry about every other person asking me about robbing me...I mean, trading with me.

All that said, I'm married, so there is no "eye-candy" benefit for me, but I would love to see more girls who play strongly and can compete.  But, in all honesty, I do believe that it is going to take a change from the male side of the room for something like that to happen...you know, like a middle-school dance.

So...pic for pic?

Kidding. We actually have a number of women/girls who play at our store regularly, probably a greater percentage than most places. Part of the problem is that so many guys who play magic are socially retarded, but when your store regularly has female competetors, it stops being "Oh my god, I'm playing against a girl!" and starts becoming "Crap, Danielle is gonna blow me out with turn 3, 4, and 5 Acid Mosses again." (You know what you did!)

No question, I prefer that Magic players be Magic players, first and foremost.  I have actually played against several new female players at prerelease events, and I have actually tried to teach them better play during the match to help them out.  Even if her deck is not the best, learning and growing the game should be the prerogative of every Magic player.

So, thank you for your first blog post, and I hope you continue to enjoy playing Magic.

Post freely and often, and if we can, we can all help each other improve.  Trust me, I learn much more than I teach when I play Magic, but I really enjoy the opportunity to give back.

Yes, I speak for the entire male-dominated Magic community when I say that "Yes, we like to see girls playing Magic."
