Hey guys. I went undefeated at Illinois States, taking first place. I realize I haven't blogged/written an article in a while, and, frankly, the reason is because I felt like my game was regressing and so no one would want to hear anything a mid-tier PTQ player had to say. Shortly after I overcame this insecurity, I bunkered down into testing. I was going to write some articles on the testing process, but the technology ended up being so good, that I wanted to prove to myself tha... Read More
Magic: the Gathering held States this past weekend (or Champs, if you prefer). I suspect most people reading this participated, so no big news there. I was one of the lucky ones this time around, though. No, no, I didn't top 8 (42nd out of 196 in beautiful sunny California). In fact, my 5-3 record wasn't enough even to earn the 12 booster packs that were awarded as prizes down to 25th place. I am lucky not for how well I did, but instead for how much I learned. States is now a thing of the past. I prepared for it a lot even if our country was stripped of Champs I still wanted to develop my skills to a new level after a poor showing at Regionals. Excuse me for not posting this on Friday, but this weekend was a hectic one. I went to "States" - Another term for a higher level magic tournament. Magic has always been the one game I've never done all that well at, but I was happy with my 6-2, 16th place /144 performance that earned me some packs...and respect for playing a deck equivilant to someone playing Exodia in Yu-Gi-Oh!
But I'm back now, taking a break in between football to talk a little more about my article "Looking Without Se... Read More
I've been looking at taking the next step up from FNM, and States is definately the next most competitive but accessible tournament. I'm a control player at heart. If I can't start my list with either 4 Wrath of God or 4 Damnation, I just don't feel right. The deck I've had my eye on and prepared for States is a Snow White deck. 4 Martyr of Sands4 Condemn4 Oblivion Ring4 Wrath of God3 Sacred Mesa3 Story Circle1 Crovax, Ascendant Hero3 Foresee1 Jace...
