The Cheap Duelist: Batteryman
Posted On 07/16/2008 15:59:43 by DevilMayCry - Read 4334 time(s)

Let's all be serious for a moment. We all can't afford to buy D-Draws, CCVs, Judgment Dragons or DADs. Some of us just don't have the money to spend or just aren't that willing to invest that much in a game. That where there are alternatives. There are many decktypes out there that stand their own ground against the "top-tier" decks out there at a fraction of the price. Today, we'll be looking at one of personal favorites, Batteryman OTK.

Why this deck?

Simple really. Nearly all cards in this deck are common! All of the Batterymen used except for one are common (Industrial Strength is a rare in LODT) and the wide majority of the spells and traps in this deck were once printed as commons. This deck can easily cost you less than $20 depending on your build.

The Idea:

The Batteryman OTK revolves around one thing: getting 3 Batteryman AA onto the field via Inferno Reckless Summon and dishing out maximum damage. Light of Destruction has added a vital part to this equation: Short Circuit. Arguably one of the best Batteryman support cards, this card destroys EVERYTHING on your opponent's side of the field as long as you have 3 Batteryman cards on your side of the field. The best part? No cost. You do not have to give up a thing to play this card. So, the most ideal OTK combo in this deck is:

S/T destruction card + Special Summoning card reviving AA + IRS + Short Circuit

This of course be done without the S/T destruction card, but it's always good to have.

The Deck:

This deck will follow the unspoken mandatory OTK rule:

Thou shalt put lots of monsters and spells in this deck, but not many traps.

Monsters:

Monsters in this deck serve 1 of 3 purposes:

1. I'm going to bring out AA

2. I'm going to support summoning AA

3. I'm going to be a back-up strategy if AA doesn't summon fast enough

First off, lets handle the first category, the summoners. We are going to max out on Batteryman Charger and Batteryman Micro-Cell. Batteryman Micro-Cell protects you from multiple attackers, adds an additional draw engine to the deck and thins out your deck in the process. It can also serve as tribute bait if it survives. Batteryman Charger also summons a AA and serves as a beatstick after it's summoning. Also note that when both of these use their effects there are at least 2 Batterymen on the field now. If you Flip Summoned Micro-Cell you can just summon another Battery from your hand to make 3. You can also use Battery Charger to summon a 3rd from your Graveyard. Remember, in this deck, 3 is the magic number!

Now let's handle the second category, the support system. Oddly enough, this section is very small and mostly helps the monsters in the first category, instead of AA itself. Cards that fit into this category are Cyber Dragon, Spell Striker, Marshmellon, Spirit Reaper, Arcana Force 0 - The Fool and Batteryman D. Cyber Dragon and Spell Striker serve as Charger tribute bait, each of them better in more specific types of OTK (Cyber with decks running Guardian of Order, Striker with decks abusing Short Circuit). Marsh, Reaper and Fool serve as walls used for tribute bait as well when there usefulness is up (luring out an attacker and dealing 1000 damage if you used Marsh). In this version we'll be going with both Cyber Dragon and Spell Striker, as combining them allow Charger to run with few flaws. Batteryman D is the only card here that can directly support AA, as it becomes a wall that must be broken in order to attack AA.

The last section is for the back-ups. This your ace up your sleeve and serve only when your main goal (OTK) can't be fulfilled. Cards that fit into this category are Batteryman Industrial Strength, Guardian of Order, The Calculator and Freed the Brave Wanderer. Guardian of Order can see massive play in this deck due to the fact that it is extremely easy to get 2 LIGHTs on the field with this deck (Batteryman Charger, Micro-Cell, IRS, etc...). Guardian also has 2 other common OTKs playable in this deck, 1 of which is the famous Cyber-Calcualtor-Guardian OTK. The Calculator can also see massive play in here as long as Guardian of Order is used. Otherwise, it's best to avoid using him. Freed can clear out obstacles for your Guardian and Industrial. Industrial is an amazing card, able to clear the well-known "T-Set" (1 monster in face-down defense and a set S/T) and able to destroy S/T's when leading up to a OTK. It can basically fit in both the 2nd and 3rd categories.

Spells:

Since this is a AA OTK deck, we are obviously going to max out on the 2 cards that are vital to this deck's theme: IRS and Short Circuit. We will also be running 2 Battery Charger to back-up the monster summoners like Charger and Micro. Other than that, the rest of the spells are all staples! Heavy, MST, Reborn and Brain all fit in this deck. Since there is no perfect draw card for Batteries right now, this deck will be utilizing Hand Destuction as well as Card Destruction. Monster destruction is frowned upon since IRS needs your opponent to have 1 monster but Smashing Ground and Lightning Vortex both can see play in this deck.

Traps:

In Batteryman OTK decks, there are no theme-based traps that must be used. If you are questioning on why I am not including Portable Battery Pack, the answer will be in the "What didn't make the cut?" section towards the bottom of this entry. All of the traps in this section (Save Mirror) are meta-based and can be inter-changed based on what is played in your area. For this deck, I'll say I'm building it to face a lot of Gladiator Beast decks at a SJC (because SJCs are brimming with creativity). For this situation I will run Threatning Roar, Royal Oppression, Dinine Wrath and Mirror Force. Threatning stops the "tag out" effect they love to abuse and also opens up an OTK if you happen to have a Micro set (more on that later). Divine Wrath is a tech that can cover so many different decks, it's not even funny. Gladiators, DAD, Judgment, Monarchs - you name it, it'll stop it. It's discard can also be beneficial in dumping AA for revival with Charger or dumping un-needed Batteries for use with Industrial Strength. Royal Oppression is a new staple tech ever since the ruling change for continous traps with ignition-like effects. It can be used in here, but with caution. This can also screw over your OTK and even some of your back-up strategies if you are not careful. use this in response to a Gyzarus, DAD or Judgment and then let it be Special Summoning deterent for the opponent. Have a S/T destruction or Industrial (if they allow it) ready to destroy it when needed.

What didn't make the cut?

Honest:

An excellent theme card and effective for the Batteries. However, it's price tag ultimately decided it's position. If you have these, run them. If not, go with what you got. But keep a look out for an easy Honest if possible...

Enemy Controller:

An effective card that can be both offensive and defensive, it can block attacks and provide tributes. This card couldn't be put in because it's main purpose (Tribute effect) is provided by the mass quantity of special summoning cards in this deck. Also, I think Brain Control is more of the lone wolf kind of guy.

Portable Battery Pack:

Some of you might be saying "But it summons 2 Batteries OMG LOL!!1!". Yes, it does. however you can't use Inferno Reckless Summon with it. This can be confirmed by reading the first sentence of both cards.

"You can only activate this card when 1 monster with an ATK of 1500 points or less is Special Summoned to your side of the field while there is a face-up monster on your opponent's side of the field."

"Select 2 'Batteryman' monsters from your Graveyard and Special Summon them in Attack Position."

Inferno Reckless Summon can only be used if 1 monster is being summoned, Portable Battery Pack summons 2. The only way it would work is if your opponent used D.D. Crow or something similar on one of the targets. So, unless your psychic, don't use this card in the OTK. Perhaps in the Guardian build, but not this one.

FAQ:

Q: Are there any other OTKs I can use with this deck?

A:Yes, there are 2. One is the Calculator OTK. However, it is too build specific. Another general one that can be used is flipping a Micro, getting a AA. Tribute Micro for Charger, get another AA. If you have Short Circuit, now you can use it. After that summon Guardian and attack for OVER 9000!

Q: What's the most expensive card for this deck?

A: Matters on what kind of OTK build it is, but most of the time it is Honest or Mirror Force.

Q: What packs do you suggest buying to make this deck?

A: Light of Destruction SE packs. You get 3 packs and you'll at least get 7 Batteryman related commons. You can find the AAs and other commons from other sets in common boxes. The holos can be found at a vendor or online.

Q: I'm not a fan of OTKs, what other kind of Battery decks are there?

A: The 2 other popular ones are the Battery Swarm/Beatdown deck, which doesn't really focus on the AA OTK that much and doesn't run Inferno Reckless Simmon. The other is Batteryman Turbo, which runs Reasoning and Monster gate to thin the deck and Magical Stone Excavation to get back vital spell cards. However, this build is much more expenisive.

Q: I can has cheezburger?

A: Of course.

can someone help me with my batteryman control deck?

07/23/2008 12:05:57

Yes, it is possible to run the deck without it. You can use more support based monsters like Morphing Jar (if drawing is an issue) or more monsters like Marshmellon (Reaper, the Fool, etc.). You can also use an extra D so you have more targets for Micro, Charger and Industrial.

Can you run the deck without Guardian of Order because I probably cannot get it.

07/21/2008 22:08:41
I had heard about it but never tried it. I've always tried to keep the deck not too focused on the Batteryman OTK. G-Bind would stop Charger and Guardian, the other 2 cards I use to commonly OTK with. Guess that's why I've never considered it. In my next article I'll be mentioning an alternate strategy that uses Threatning for defense, rather than something permanent like G-Bind or Area B.

have you ever tried gravity bind in your build? It's really great in my swarm deck, and it really helps me when i play gladiators or need stall for a combo.

I've tested Ryko Mill builds but I've never liked them. Or should I say, they never agree with me. Morphing has been on and off, and is mostly put in non-OTK bulds (although I don't use him ATM). I've thought about Prime but Chargers have always been the priority to summon. Crow is a problem and is sided against. Oppresion has never been a problem though. Strange. Book has been teched, but only in non-OTK for me.

yeah, i play the more swarm/tribute based version, with ryko and morphing jar to speed up the recursion and work as tribute fodder for prime material and charger. Button cell is great tribute fodder with battery man D. :) Then you use book of moon to reuse all the amazing flip effects. I perfer that version since the OTK has dead hands and is esspecially weak against D.D. Crow and royal oppresion.

Ah, this is prettyy ironic. I have another OTK deck with near exact fixes. It uses more of a Cyber and Guardian style for back-up. However, Reckless has never worked for me. I'll give it another shot. I was planning on adding it to my next blog though

07/17/2008 13:58:17
- 2 striker
- 2 oppression
- 2 divine wrath
+ marshmallon
+ BMan D
+1 threatning
+3 reckless greed

Other than the changes , great blog and hope to see more from u soon
