Maryland Regionals - 1st Leeroy Jenkins!
Posted On 07/14/2008 16:23:25 by den18 - Read 1798 time(s)

Hey Everyone,

In case you don't know me, which all but 2 of you don't, my name is Denis and I'm part of team ThanksForPlaying. Today I bring you the exciting tale of my regionals experience!

As most articles do I'll start off with the decklist. I decided to go with the good old fashioned Mythen of the Fang.

Hero: Mythen of the Fang

Allies

2 Apprentice Teep

2 Zandar Shadesprocket

4 Marksman Glous

4 Jeleane Nightbreeze

4 Myriam Starcaller

2 Leeroy Jenkins

Abilities

4 Cyclone

3 Tainted Earth

4 The Natural Order

4 Wrath

4 Form of the Serpent

2 Moonfire

Equipment

4 Twig of the World Tree

3 Cobrascale Hood

Quests

4 One Draenei’s Junk . . .

3 Dr. Boom

3 Corki’s Ransom

4 Orders from Lady Vashj

Side Deck

4 Xanata, the Lightsworn

2 Moonfire

3 Healing Touch

1 Tainted Earth

The deck is very close to the Darkmoon Faire Lyon lists with a few changes. The main one being the absence of the inspire allies.

As I was testing the build from Lyon something dawned on me...I really don't like Xavar and Vindicator Kadel. Now don't get me wrong, when I completed Marks of Kil’jaeden I was happy and when there was a Myriam out along with Vindicator it made me a very happy panda, but those times were few and far between. Xavar always seemd to be either doing very little damage or on the wrong side of a trade, while Vindicator, apart from when it's out with Myriam, just seemed like a Vanilla 3/2 that dies very easily.

So I traded in Vindicator for Jeleane and put in Moonfire for Xavar to help against control first game.

As was expected, this being kind of a dead format and all, our regionals had 14 people. Nevertheless, I pressed forward my hope being set on that sexy EA Rescue the Survivors!

We had an eventful pre first round with some hands being raised when the Judge announced that Hunt for Illidan was not legal for this tournament. We had a whopping 3 people scurry to change their decks and decklists with the judge being nice and giving a time extension.

Round 1
: Mythen of the Fang

My opponent, being one of the people who had to change their decks, was finishing up and after waiting a little for him we started the match.

Game 1 was over pretty fast as he drew his not so relevant cards that he had to put in for the hunt for illidan ones as I led with Zandar, Marksman, Form, Myriam.

Game 2 I played a Marksman Glous on turn 2 and he wrathed it. Turn 3 I played and attacked with form, while he, obviously seeing my genius, played his form and attacked. Turn 4 I played Twig and attacked but as I attempted to strike with Twig he said I couldn't do it. We called a Judge and after some heated discussion from him, along with him almost dropping, he said he didn't want to play and conceded the game.

The judge talked to him afterwards, explaining the mechanics behind it, and I think it all worked out.

1-0, 2-0

Round 2
: Omedus the Punisher

I was playing against an old school Omedus deck. My opponent said that he hasn't played in a while and went with something he knows. I was excited about this match as I wanted to see how well the new top deck would compare to the old one.

Game 1: I had a turn 1 Apprentice Teep followed by a Jeleane to which he played Voss followed by.... nothing. On turn 3 I had Form to which he had...nothing. It was a short game after that. He played Broan and killed my Jeleane later in the game, and after the game told me that he didn't draw any relevant plays.

Sideboard
: I sided in Xanata's for Tainted Earth

Game 2: This game was an absolute blowout. He had turn 1 Voss followed by a shadowfiend on turn 2 and played a Waz'luk. Turn 3 he played Shadowfiend and Kaegella followed by a shadowfiend and broan on turn 4. I tried to keep up but without drawing any non-sorcery removal it was hard to deal with shadowfiend and his friends beating me down. His flip killed me for just enough and it was at this point I remembered why this deck was amazing back in the day.

Game 3: This game was more back and forth but he eventually got in enough damage that I could either deal with his allies or stop his flip from killing me but not both.

1-1. 3-2

Round 3:
Preist Control- I believe the hero was Omedus.

I don't have a good recollection of this match, apart form that it lasted a VERY long time. His deck consisted of a lot of heal spells like Greater Heal and Canniblize along with discard and and removal. Throughout both games I didn't see his win condition though I suspect it was Voidfire Wand.

First game I had a good starting hand with turn 1 Tainted Earth and later rushed him out with 2 Jeleane Nightbreeze which he couldn't deal with. Game 2 took quite a while with me getting him down and him casting Greater Heal or Cannibilize. Eventually I got out a Form of the Serpent in accordance with Twig of the World Tree that I was paying 3 to swing with. After many turns of this he couldn't find an answer to either and was taking 8 a turn so he conceded.

2-1. 5-2

Round 4:
Mythen of the Fang

My opponent was a nice guy who I've seen around a lot of regionals. He was playing the Darkmoon Faire version of Mythen.

Game 1: We both had good draws in this game but he overpowered me eventually with 2 Myriams and a Leeroy Jenkins for the Win.

Sideboard: I sided in 3x Healing Touch and 3x Xanata for 3x Tainted Earth and 2x Moonfire and 1x Wrath

Game 2: I drew the nuts with Zandar, Marksman Glous, Wrath his Xanata, Myriam,
Form. He killed my Myriam with Twig but I had a Natural Order for it and he couldn't catch up.

Game 3: This game was very close. He had a better start than me and had me at 13 while I had him at 8. I recovered after I drew my MVP for this game Healing Touch.

I touched myself and brought my damage down to 3. We hit each other back and forth with Twigs and Myriams until I killed his Myriam and got another one of mine to stick. He played Cobrascale and and Angelista and attacked which I responded to with Cyclone. He returned Twig of the Worl Tree to my hand at end of turn. We were both in the 20's at this point and I was doing a lot of math on his turn while he was thinking. On my turn I drew my card and it was.... Healing Touch. I gues I didn't need to do math at all. I cast the Touch, Hit him for 5 with Myriam and attack for Game.

3-1, 7-3

Top 8

Quaterfinals: Mythen of the Fang

My opponent was also playing what looked like the Darmoon Faire Lyon version of the Mythen Deck. I don't remember these games that well but eventually it came down to Myriam as it usually does, in the first game, while in the second game I had a good hand and rushed him out.

Semifinals: Plague Fleshbane

This match was against my friend and fellow team member Jordan. He was playing a Warlock Control deck which abused Demonic Knowledge with cards like Sarmoth and the absolutely huge Dread Infernal.

I brought out and the awesome Cobrascale Hood + Tainted Earth Combo against Jordan this game and along with Marksman Glous and Twig he couldn't keep up.

Game 2: This game was a lot closer with me casting Tainted Earth and him grabbing Cobrascale Hood with Eye of Krilog. I then preceded to try to rush him out but he had removal, Cannibilize, and Dread Infernal. I put Moonfire on him early in the game and with him taking 6 from Tainted Earth I was able to return Moonfire and play Moonfire for enough to kill him 10 or so turns later.

Finals: Fallenstar

My opponent was James, another part of Team TFP. We actually tested this matchup a lot and it was pretty terrible for me.

Game 1: I drew a nuts hand with Tainted Earth, Cobrascale Hood, Form of the Serpent, and Twig while he had none of his removal or relevant protectors.

Game 2: I rushed him out again as he didn't draw removal and I was able to stop all of his protectors with Wrath, Cyclone, and removing counters off of form.

Not the best way to win a match but it happens and James took it in stride.

Lessons Learned:

Healing Touch is VERY good in the mirror. It allows you to play more aggresively which is usually what you need to do. I was happy with both Cobrascale Hood and Tainted Earth and think mainboarding against control with a huge sidebaord against aggro was the right call. I've also learned that it's very fun to yell LEEROOOOY JEEEENKINS!

Thanks for Reading

I'm on the ball as always
The article itself is also well written, however I must say one thing. With HfI out, people aren't interested in old decks and the likes, but more on the new stuff. Still, grats on the 1st!

:). I was curious how many people would catch the quote.
