Strong Statements 5/14/08
Posted On 05/14/2008 15:57:42 by mtglordtom24 - Read 180 time(s)
I am upset because this will be the third time I have written this and had an error erase it all as I submit it. Strong Statements is the best title I have received and so it has won my little contest unless it can be outdone.

After hearing about the Star City dominance by fairies, I have decided to take a break from writing about standard in favor of block since I feel my efforts to diversify and innovate standard are in vain! They aren't, but it feels that way...

Anyway since I've already typed this twice before I feel lackluster about typing this, but here is Brion's Mirror!

4x Flamekin Harbinger
4x Smokebraider
4x Mirror Entity
4x Ceaseless Searblades
4x Brion Stoutarm
3x Reveillark
2x Giant Harbinger

4x Lash Out
4x Oblivion Ring
3x Crib Swap

4x Ancient Ampitheater
4x Primal Beyond
4x Vivid Meadow
3x Vivid Crag
7x Mountain
2x Plains

SB
4x Firespout
4x Kitchen Finks
4x Puncture Bolt
3x Murderous Redcap

The deck looks at first glance like a bad aggro deck, which it could be if you don't combo off. What combo? Something with Mirror Entity and Reveillark? Kind of. How about Mirror Enity+Ceaseless Searblades+Brion Stoutarm! That's an infinite combo my friends.
You stack Mirror Entity at 0 with a Searblades and a none summoning-sick Brion. The Searblades triggers since Mirror Entity is an Elemental, resolve the Searblades trigger but NOT the Mirror Entity's, instead add another zero and resolve the Searblades. When your stack is full of Mirror Entity's 0's, use Brion to throw the Searblades and win!!! :)

The problems are that Brion must have stayed in play a turn and that it is very suceptable to removal. You cna't fish him up with Harbinger of the elemental variety and he can't be powered out with Smokebraider.
I'm in a hurry so I'll just say you should try it out, the list could use Mulldrifter over Beseech.
G2G

Until you come before me to drink in my wisdom again,

Tom

This is a block deck, how are there wish decks? There is no Rev combo here, it only gets back the Mirror Entity and Ceasseless Searblades if they are killed or thoughtseized.

Playtesting results are that in fact it is too slow! Against the Faeries it only went off once out of ten games and that was because the faeries draw was nine land and only two spells by that time. The real issue here is that you are combining too many combo's into one decklist. The Stoutarm doesn't fit with the Reveillark combo...and not even sure why he's in there...as a target for the Harbringer maybe? But that doesn't work with the deck and what the combo you states does so I'm lost on that. Maybe there was something that was supposed to happen that I didn't see and do.

G/W Wish decks beat this to smithereens. Even with your sideboard this match up is subpar and lacks serious consentration. I stopped playtesting after that as i was not impressed.

Sorry man...no hard feelings meant.

I played it against standard RbDW and it was 40%, I was bored and I played the two. Combo on turn 5 happened 2 out of 10 games, turn six once and I aggroed out the other win. In all 4 wins, the RbDW didn't play/draw a Thoughtseize and in all 6 loses the RbDW had either a Thoughtseize or a Flame Javelin (Stoutarm). Thoughtseize allowed RbDW to smash with guys before Brion's Mirror could stabilize but it was a Standard legal deck vs. a block legal deck! I am worried since Thoughtseize will see a lot of play in Block though...

Charles? Ever get that play testing done?

Tom: have you run this deck against a gauntlet of any kind (elves, faeries, kithkin, GW beats, for example)?

You can combo off consistantly on turn 5 or 6, which in block is lightning fast. Especially so when you consider that you can aggro your opponent out or use removal to slow them down so you can win. Brion Stoutarm is the weakest link in the deck since he is so vulnerable, in testing it is surprisingly good, winning most games, about 5 or 6/10 without comboing off. It loses when you can draw or get Mirror Entity, which isn't often or most frequently when you hold back for a turn when you play Brion so you don't get a combo piece blocked and they Shriekmaw Brion or something or outrace you. I like the deck and it is better and faster than the Merfolk combo. I'm going to keep working on the deck, it should be more consistant with the combo.

This deck appears to be too slow. I will build this this evening and playtest to see how it really feels. Of course my first playtest will be against Faeries. I'll let you know what I really think tomorrow after playtesting this decklist.
