Tom's Thoughts 5/12/08
Posted On 05/12/2008 15:48:24 by mtglordtom24 - Read 488 time(s)
Since no one has suggested a shnazzy title, it will, until someone outdoes this one, be Tom's Thoughts. I would love an epic title, so if you've got a thought, bring it to the table, my name is Tom Strong, so you should be able to come up with something good.
Today I would like to bring to light the best kept secret on the Magic interwebs, counter control is really good, even without a single fairie. I have played it the last two weeks to a 3-1 2nd place and a 4-1 4th place yesterday. May I present to you, U/w Teferi Deck Wins:

3x Teferi
3x Sower of Temptation
2x Aeon Chronicler
2x Guile
4x Kitchen Sink
4x Ancestral Vision
4x Cryptic Command
4x Rune Snag
4x Remove Soul
2x Cancel
3x Oblivion Ring

4x Mystic Gate
4x Nimbus Maze
4x Adarkar Wastes
2x Mouth of Ronom
7x Snow Covered Island
4x Snow Covered Plains

SB:
3x Wrath of God
4x Plumeveil
2x Pithing Needle
2x Negate
2x Jace Beleren
2x Magus of the Tabernacle

Clearly the only problem that kept me from X-0ing the last two weeks was mullinganing, having an Oona resolve against me and getting Thoughtseized by an elves deck which, beats this deck anyways I think. I don't believe Elves is anywhere near as prominant as it used to be and Oona should never resolve against you, but I had mulliganed and he had resolved two Ancestrall Vision against me. Otherwise this deck has extremely favorable matchups.

This deck absolutely plasters Big Mana decks, probably about 80-20 preboard and 70-30 post board. It lays a beatdown on Reveillark, about 70-30 pre and post-board. Fairies is actually really tight, it comes down to who rips a better opening hand and imposes their will, I'd say about 50-50 pre-board if you're lucky but more like 60-40 post board after you get your Plumeveils, Pithing Needles and Magus of the Tabernacle (for their Bitterblossom tokens). Against any midrange like Mono-Black or G/W, then you pretty much auto win except for hand disruption, so you should be about 70-30 if you get hit in the grip. Then you get your variety of aggro decks, the main seperating factor being a card called Thoughtseize. Against R/g Deck Wins or G/W aggro you are about 65-35 and even out of the board, they get Vexing Shusher and Fulminator Mage if they can and you get your Wrath of Gods, Magus of the Tabernacle and Plumeveils. The only really rough matchups are aggro decks that brandish Thoughtseize in their holster. I have noticed that your worst matchup is Doran.dec, they have all of the threats you don't want to see, Thoughtseize, Bitterblossom, Treetop Village, Gaddock Teeg (post board) and Garruk. Doran.dec also accelerates them into play off of Birds and Elves which make them almost invincible on the play. If Doran.dec gets the play against you and you don't have a hand of Kitchen Sink, a counterspell, an Oblivion Ring, an Ancestral Vision and a decent smattering of land then you lose. Preboard you are the UNDERDOG at 30-70 and 40-60 after you bring in your Magus of the Tabernacle's, Wrath of Gods, Pithing Needles and maybe Negates for their Garruk and Profane Commands you are 50-50 on the play and 40-60 on the draw.

All things considered, I wouldn't be playing this deck if I didn't think it was the best deck in the format . As long as you have decent play skills and more importantly, common sense, you should be able to lay the smackdown with this meta-killer. Any questions and comments are appreciated and PLEASE THINK UP A TITLE for this Blog.

Until you come before me again to drink in my wisdom,

Tom

Jace comes in against other counter control decks, Strong Statements is a terrific title, Wrath I have found unnecesary in the maindeck, I seem to need it very rarely, that was my own call, I rather like having more counterspells and this deck was originally the exact GP Krakow Pickles deck and that's why the White commitment is so low. Adding more white cards like Mesa and Crovax would just weaken the deck. I hated the GP deck, it was too slow and didn't have enough counter magic and I kept losing with it, so I built this. Teferi's Moat could be good but what do I take out? Jace? Good idea, I'll see. Guile is extremely strong, he comes in off of Teferi pretty well and he is the best win condition available. I tried Oona, no good and there really are no other options. I rather dislike Pact of Negation, it's really subpar without Guile and I don't like tapping 5 mana on my turn to counter a spell.

I think that my next blog will be about block, I don't know if you want me to keep going across standard with my U/G deck idea or into block where I have a medley of thoughts.

So far it looks like Strong Statements will be the title and my next blog will be in the next couple of days.

This deck does seem pretty strong.  How good is Guile?  He seems a bit clunky in a deck that wants too keep mana open to counter stuff, but doesn't run pact of negation.  I also find the lack of Teferis Moat questionable when you admit that G/B Elf decks are a problem.  I do however like the Magus against Faerie decks.

It appears to be headed somewhere good. I suggest you throw in Magus of the Tabernacle if you aren't going to run Wrath of God. Both would be best though.

Hey, I've been reading your blogs and I have enjoyed drinking in your wisdom.  I'm a big fan of UW control in most recent formats, so not to be quizzical but more because I'm curious, I've got a few questions.

1) No wrath maindeck is a bit confusing to me, in a creature-rich format, why is this the case?  I'm guessing that it's a combination of limited space and already favorable matchups, but I just feel a little out of place without wrath in my UW control.

2) If I read correctly, Jace wasn't referenced as ever going in from the sideboard.  So, what matchups might that guy come in against?

3) When I built UW it was very different.  It had a lot more white for cards like crovax, sacred mesa, and ajani.  I'm sure you've given some or all of these guys a try, why didn't you choose them?  Was it just too much of a mana investment or is it again a space issue?

4) I'd go with Strong Statements.  It's cute, contains alliteration, and is.... well... stronger than Tom's Thoughts.  I don't know, perhaps a future poster will give one that has a better ring.
