The E Machine: Seismic Swans Combo
Posted On 05/11/2008 23:46:53 by E_McKenzie - Read 4298 time(s)
Hello everyone and welcome to the E Machine.

Before I begin my ramblings about the new Seismic Swans Combo deck, let me introduce myself. My name is E McKenzie. And yes, E is really my first name, but I’ll explain that later. I live in Nashville, TN.  I play for Brotherhood, our team that consists of myself, Eli Aden, Rich Elder, Stan Muszynski, Jeremy Mathis, and Tillman Bragg. I have been playing competitively for about two years, but I've probably played more competitive Magic in those two years that some people have played in their lifetime. I'm also a Level 1 Judge and if you've played in any Premier Events in Tennessee, chances are you've seen me before. Between testing every night, drafting on MODO, and playing 3 tournaments minimum per weekend, our team probably grinds out about 400+ games a week, so hopefully I've got enough insight into the decks each week. I've made the decision to start writing more so please come check back with me every Monday so that I may continue to serve up some Magic technology for everyone who wants it. There... that wasn't so bad was it? Ok, on to the deck. First of all, let's cover the main deck and the new list that we've come up with.

*dramatic music*

MAIN DECK
4 Beseech the Queen
4 Manamorphose
4 Telling Time
4 Lotus Bloom
4 Swans of Bryn Argoll
4 Seismic Assault
4 Ponder
1 Vexing Shusher
1 Dread
2 Gaea's Blessing

4 Shivan Reef
4 Underground River
4 Graven Cairns
3 River of Tears
4 Dakmor Salvage
2 Tolaria West
3 Reflecting Pool
4 Gemstone Mine

So this is it… I'm sure everyone already knows how the combo works, but in case you don't, I'll demonstrate.

With Seismic Assault and Swans of Bryn Argoll in play, you discard Dakmor Salvage to your Seismic Assault and target the Swans of Bryn Argoll, therefore drawing you two cards. You dredge the Dakmor Salvage you discarded for your first draw and draw another card. At this point, you draw until you can throw enough lands at your opponents head to kill them or until you get two Salvage's in order to throw one at your opponent's head and another at your Swans to get them both back and repeat the process.

So let's break down the contents.
Some of the deck’s cards are pretty intuitive, such as Lotus Bloom for mana acceleration, Manamorphose for mana-filtering and Swans and Seismic Assault as part of the combo. Beseech the Queen, Telling Time, and Ponder are all there for deck manipulation so you can get to your combo pieces as quickly as possible. The Blessing’s are in there so you can keep the combo going once you start to go off. The Dread is there so you can shuffle it back when it gets dredged as well as an alternate win condition. The Vexing Shusher could be the MVP of the deck, as the deck is very susceptible to counterspells. The manabase may look a little shaky, but trust me, it’s the best we can come up with without losing consistency. Now let’s take a peek at the board.

SIDEBOARD
3 Vexing Shusher
4 Pact of Negation
4 Extirpate
4 Slaughter Pact

The Shusher’s and the Pact of Negation’s come in against the Faeries and any other deck with counterspells. Shusher’s are amazing for preventing your opponent from countering anything you play while the P.O.N. serves as a last second counterspell to something like Nameless Inversion or a spell to get your Swans or Assault off the board while you are getting your combo on. Extirpates come in against the mirror, as well as both Pact’s to deal with the Swans of your opponent or to stop them from getting their combo pieces in play. The Slaughter Pact’s are also incredible against any off the beatdown decks besides the burn decks unless they are playing the version with the big 9/7 monstrosity of Greater Gargadon. I’m going to be playing this deck this coming weekend at three different tournaments to see how it runs in a tournament day. Next week, I’ll be making the rundown of all the matchups I played as well as any updates that we’ve made throughout the weekend. As a sidenote, if you guys like this article and want me to continue, please leave me some feedback. Until next week…

Yeah, I apologize for that, I haven't taken the deck to a tourney yet so the tourney/matchup report will have to wait until next week. =/

I have tested Multiple version of this deck and it is to eay to disrupt with Split second cards. There is a way that you can sidestep Extirpate is to play abundance.

I think this deck is pretty snazzy, but I feel like it's far too easily disrupted to be viable in standard.

In most cases, it's either Telling Time, Ponder, or Manamorphose, as the others are just too much of key cards to take out. The exceptions to this are Dread, Shusher, and POSSIBLY one Blessing... which I wouldn't advise, but I'm sure it's right in some cases...

What do you take out when sideboarding??
