Girls in Magic
Posted On 05/07/2008 03:12:05 by spiffykyote - Read 1073 time(s)

Being a girl in the Magic world is tough. Oh sob story oh woe-is-me yes however it is true. As a girl you have only a few choices as far as I see it. You can fulfill the stereotypes and be a mediocre player that's just around for eye candy, has her one deck that someone else made for her, and probably just is not into the game. There is also the option of just not being capable of procuring anything other than those mediocre decks and being left to getting tossed around as the unwanted player in the shop. Lastly, there is the girl with potential who can do it like the guys can. ('Nuff said about that last one.)

It may seem harsh, but these evaluations hold strong in my personal experience- not that I am really trying to insult anyone with these judgements. What I am curious about though is whether or not male players like to see female players in the game- whether they prefer their girls to be face beaters or face beaten. Hell, there are lots of other games that I could ask the very same question of: Is Halo 3 better on Live when experienced with a girl on your team or is it strictly a guy thing? Is it better if she throws the best stickies or if she's just part of your Killtastic?

In this my first blog post I wanted to get it out of the way and let everyone know that I am a girl who plays Magic and that this is where these perspectives are coming from. I am mostly the "potential" type of player in that I hold my own ground and seem to have a pretty good track record, but I am trying really hard to not get an ego about it. I just want to write, play, learn, and draft right next to everyone else. If it turns out that being a girl makes every step of the way a little more special, then so be it, a little attention is kind of nice. That is the whole reason to blog- this perspective is so rarely heard of that I have yet to find anything myself and that is why I want to start writing about Magic in the hopes that I can get out there and write what people haven't read before.

And yes, I understand I am not the first, I am not the best, but the idea is that someday I could be and whether I'm mana flooded or mana screwed it's still best two out of three and just like any other player I could pull the rest of the match right out of my ass.

And now that we are past the introductions I will start to write a little less fluff and a little more stuff. I have lots of subject matter that can be shared such as lots of combos including Grinning Ignus(FS) and Painter's Servant(SHM) (not together of course). Why more hasn't been written about either one of them is beyond me but I fully expect that since Painter's Servant is still a new card more will come from him. I also aim on making a deck that puts Oona, Queen of the Fae in the spotlight instead of just a "why not" card. There are other plans in the works for future blogs like what I find to be the staples of Shadowmoor in draft or any other format, and so it remains to be seen where I might go with all of this, but hopefully I can keep up and make continuous posts that someone out there will find interesting.

So tell me, how did I do? Too pretentious?

Just wanted to let you know that this blog was one of the inspirations for my blog that you commented on.  Keep up the good work in both the card shop and the digital commentaries.

To misclick- thanks for your response, I'm glad I wrote something satisfactory. Next blog will come on Saturday and I decided that it will be about draft with actual results (assuming I do well this week of course). Even if I don't do well, that blog can be put on hold and I will post about something else. This post only came about because I figured I needed something more base for an introductory topic. More stuff less fluff is going to be on Saturday.

Keep shuffling up!

It is rather obvious that a girl could be a good magic player. Being good at this game is very easy since the majority of the people who play this game are so terrible at it. Being a girl is no excuse to be bad or a reason for not being good, i dont think you could honestly say that girls cant be as good as guys at a card game. It is like saying that girls are not as smart as guys which is completely ignorant. Also, we have seen girls do good in major tournaments as of late such as the girl who finished in the money at pro tour valencia. This article was very good, hopefully the ones your write pertaining to magic are as good as this one.

Umm...no, there's no rule about flirting in the DCI floor rules. And any guy who can't keep his [stuff] together long enough to play a round of magic without drooling all over himself just because he's playing against a low-cut top probably can't handle distractions of other kinds from a dude either.

*snort* If magic players can flirt successfully, they wouldn't be playing magic competitively!

Actually, I play magic competitively and I'd say I'm pretty good at this... Hey, how you doin'? XD

Snowden: I dunno, but is there not some floor rules to stop people from distracting your play? I've read that if a girl tries to distract you in a DCI tournament (which, I'm sure they're not doing it on purpose, but boys immediately think so) you can call the judge over to stop her.

On the other hand, Magic players are magic players, they do all they can to gain the edge, just like in poker where even more of the game is based on luck (This is not an invitation to open fire on the discussion of Magic vs Poker). Heck, I feint to tap my mana to make them think I have a trick while I have three lands in hand.

Hellz yeah. Worst that can happen is you make her mad and she begins to play a little more ruthlessly- just be careful cause that ruthlessness may be your downfall.

Also, guys, if you see a girl accross the table, don't be afraid to flirt to throw HER off her game. Everyone focuses on the other angle (girl=distracting cause I'm a dude), but it works the other way too. Especially when you have my mad skillz. Yeah...skills with a 'z'.
