I have noticed that many players want to improve their game and simply get stuck. Yu-Gi-Oh! is not only fun but challenging and due to this we can all use the occasional bump. This bump can be in the form of a few simple tricks to beat your opponet or even revisions to game-play or even preparation. In this article I will address these styles and tips/hints to improve everyones game play.
Tip 1: Deck building
This is one of the most inportant ideas I can give another player, build a good deck, on your own. Why? You will be playing it, no the person you got the deck list from. Also, if you get help from a team, you should also revise it to suit you. Each person has a different play style, and due to this we may play cards differently. By improving how we build a deck we accomplish the first obsticle of preparation.
What I do, personally, is look for decks for insparation. As a casual player I can take a concept and turn it into my own deck. As mentioned above. For example, I am working on a Dark Return I will post soon. This deck is based off a traditional DaD but I cut DaD, added cards to suit me, play tested and now I have a personal deck. A difficult portion is building the outline. Testing is more fun so this tip can save alot of time while not making you a net-decker.
Tip 2: Deck Testing
Once you build a personal deck, testing it against other decks is important. At a SJC you can expect to find anything ranging from DaD (like I had to tell you this) and eventually a person could have a Plant OTK. You need to be ready to beat these decks, as well as new, anti-meta decks. By testing it against each deck you can simply build the best deck to stop the top decks while not having the weakness to stop OTK's or FTK's that would normally hurt you.
With the new policy of note taking you can easily abuse this deck building concept. You enter locals and write down what cards give you a problem. Then, compile what cards are useless and what cards give you the most trouble. Then, build your side-deck to counter the smaller problems you could not main deck to beat but youshould protect yourself against.
Tip 3: Game play
I can write alot of things about this but I feel by testing properly you wil see your own flaws. So, I will list some of the things that can help the most:
-Field Rush: This concept is for aggressive players. You lay it all on the line. But, this is risky. As a Six Samurai player I know that this is useful but I would only swarm if you can recover if needed. Over-extending can cost you the game.
-Conserve your hand: Simple concept. A player can save theri cards and wiat for power plays. These plays cripple your opponet. This is like conservative play styles. Notably, Adam Corn is a conservative player who plays to win and normally waits to make bigger plays. This can let you get out of a tight spot if needed.
-My Logic is better than your logic: Your opponet most likely will not be as diversed in their cations unless you can know who they are, like the pros. If you follow my above steps you have something amazing, an advantage of Logic. You know your deck and side-deck front to back and can say that you can lose a game and recover. Many players cant do this. Due to this you may over extend in some cases if you think your opponet will soon win, knowing that your deck is better prepaired reguardless of your opponets play.
I know the above have silly names, but the tips do work.
Lets be honest, their are possible hundreds of things we can do to improve but in reality, this is a good start. By having a good foundation you can easily play to suit you and your deck. Remember, that you need to use your deck not a tool but as a part of the gme which requires practice and tenacity to win with.
