Mimicing Finkel: A MODO DraftCap
Posted On 04/06/2008 23:28:27 by ckmcheetah

On a boring Sunday evening I decided to start MODO up for an LLM draft. After purchasing packs from a bot I enter a 4432 (I don't get to draft enough to warrant playing in the 8-4's although with more experience I can do reasonably well there). Here are the picks. Please feel free to comment about how badly you think I did.

The DraftCap can be found in the link below. I tried to copy/paste it here but could not get the formatting to work.

Unfortunatley a bunch of picks were cut off.  In Pack 1 there was a Wren's Run Packmaster that I considered and Entagling
Trap which I didn't consider.

I'll post the deck list soon in the comments section. Meanwhile build the deck yourself if you feel so inclined.

Match Recaps:

Round 1: doubledown42 GWR Elvish Handservant/Changeling deck

Game 1: Opponent plays multiple Handservants and fire belly changelings to make big handservant. I get a reasonably start but he eventually overruns me with the changelings. Having to play two Giant spells myself (Ranger, Setinel) doesn't help me either.

Game 2: I sideboard in Goldmeadow Dodger and Shield-Bearers and for Tric and Setinel (one less Giant for him). I brought in the Dodger to try to get a fast draw. This is exactly what happens. Dodger into Cenn's Heir, followed by my later drops leads to a quick win.

Game 3: He manages to stall my ground attack but I draw into double Plover Knights, giving me victory through the air which his deck could not deal with (also had help with Cloudgoat Ranger before Hurly Burly removed my tappers).

Round 2: Gankmeister with GB goblin/elf hybrid

Game 1: He gets stuck with just Pie Sneak and Mad Auntie. I tap his Sneak with Harrier while attacking in 4 life chunks with Heir and Springjack and eventually outlast him.

Game 2: He has multiple goblins and elves while I have a slow draw, he eventually grows a large force of people and overwhelms me.

Game 3: He has a land heavy draw. I am able to Swell an army of six attackers to get through his life points and advance to the finals.

round 3: Stormywaters G/B Warriors

Game 1: He starts with Bitterblossom into Bramblewood Paragon. I start with a few Kithkin and Springjack Knight, which I attack with on multiple occasions after reinforcing it with Bombadiers. This smooths my draws. However he spends his time creating large Trampling elves and Treefolk. He is one turn from the kill but he overextends. This allows me to have enough creatures to attack and then pump with Surge and Swell (he should have known I had both as they were revealed after clashes).

Game 2: I have Harrier to tap his largest creature, he plays Paragon into Winnower Patrol, and then is followed by Weed Pruner Poplar. I have Tric Sight to save my Harrier. He eventually overruns me with Packmaster and Battlewand Oak. He plays Dread while having a four creatue advantage, this prompt the concession.

Game 3: I switch to the red package of Giant's Ire, Blades, Lash Out, and Roar. After Game 2 I knew I had to go for the turn 5 or 6 win to have a chance. I draw all red spells and mountains and mulligan to six. I'm forced to take a gamble hand with one Plains, because the cards in my hand was better than average start for the deck. The gamble does fail however and I get overwhelmed again by Winnower Patrol.

Even though I had no rares I was pleased with the finals appearance. I am definitley at a disadvantage in the finals. I'll have to review the draft to see if I should have gone Elves by taking the Packmaster.
