TMP: Mudkips
Posted On 04/02/2008 04:35:38 by reubs11 - Read 732 time(s)

First of all, I'd like to say to all of you who clicked the link in my last blog... April Fools!

Moving on, can we talk about how much I love this guy:

This is my favorite card that has been previewed so far from Shadowmoor for a few reasons.

First of all, it's a 1/4 for only 3 mana, meaning it can take a lickin' and keep on tickin', even in this aggro heavy meta of standard and block.

Second, since the dudes are covered in mud (okay fine, clay... close enough) it gives me an excuse to nickname it Mudkips. This means that whenever I cast it I can say, "tap three for Mudkips... I herd you liek him."

Third, it has that magical toughness of 4. Much like Loxodon Hierarch before it, 4 toughness laughs at Incinerate and Lash Out, not to mention Nameless Inversion or the hardest hit from Incremental Loss. Even all 3 counters from Grim Poppet can't kill it by itself.

For the fourth reason take a look at this decklist and let me set a little situation out for you:

4 Doran, the Siege Tower
4 Dark Confidant
4 Treefolk Harbinger
4 Tarmogoyf
3 Order of Whiteclay
3 Gaddock Teeg

2 Loxodon Hierarch

3 Chrome Mox
3 Mortify
3 Thoughtseize
2 Profane Command

2 Putrefy

1 Nameless Inversion

1 Lignify

3 Windswept Heath
3 Polluted Delta
3 Treetop Village
2 Overgrown Tomb
2 Swamp
2 Forest
2 Flooded Strand
1 Godless Shrine

1 Temple Garden

1 Plains
1 Murmuring Bosk

The above deck is a post-rotation Extended deck. Now, let's say you have the awesomeness opener that is first turn land-Harbinger for Doran, second turn land-Mox-Doran and swing for three. But what if your opponent has an elimination spell, say a Smother or a Terminate or a Putrefy or a... you get the point. Your best-laid plans have gone to pot.

Ah, but what if you lay a Order of Whiteclay next turn? Then, you attack with Harbinger and Order on your fourth turn, activate the Q ability on the Order and bring back Doran. Now you're attacking with a 3/3 Harbinger and an untapped 4/4 Order even after they have wasted a piece of elimination on the Doran. What's more, they'd better knock off that reanimating Kith before anything else, lest they see beasties return from the dead every turn.

Mudkips.

I herd you liek him.
