TMP: PTQ Charleston Quasi-Report
Posted On 03/10/2008 09:56:48 by reubs11

I'm in no mood to write a full tournament report. I couldn't sleep last night because I slept 'til 4 on Sunday, so I'm working on 19 hours of waking life (factoring in that tricky savings time) with 4 more hours of classes ahead of me. So I will not be writing a full report for this PTQ, but a summary of the important facts and inclusion of useless tidbits.

If you wish to know more details you can contact me.

Fact sheet:

Went to Universe of Superheroes (my local card/comic shop) at 630ish for FNM. Won said FNM with G/B goodstuff. Traded 6 packs of Morningtide for Ravnica cos I'm festive like that. Most expensive card was Watchwolf. Ugh. Thanks for the limited points though, I guess.

While inside Universe, apparently a freaking biblical disaster took place outside. Everything's frozen. Everything. People sliding around everywhere. I did not wish to chance moving my car downt the icy icy hills.

11ish onward is a tad hazy. Went to a party at a friend's, drank some. Okay, drank a bit more than some. Hence the haziness. Pretty sure I saw some boobs at some point. No, I'm certain I did. Stumbled to my friend Matt's at 3ish in the morning to sleep on his air mattress and ready to wake up in 3 hours to drive to PTQ.

wake up at 6 by accident. had alarm set for 630. Oh well. Matt and I discuss not going because of Level 2 snow emergency. Decided to go. Live the dream, etc. Pick up Josh, hit the road at 745. Under normal conditions, 1.5 hour drive. Remember, we left at 745 a.m.

1035, arrive at Charleston site. That's right, nearly 3 hours later. In between, there was (in no particular order): ice, snow, sleet, ice, losing my phone at a gas station in Ravenswood, WV for like 15 minutes, more ice, missing our exit because it wasn't marked, and oh yea, MORE ICE. I literally sha... um... pooped bricks the entire car ride there for fear of my life

We all sign up anyway. Josh, Matt and I all get round 1 losses. Live the dream, etc.

Before round 2, I spot with Chris Woltereck. We were buddys at the Charlotte thing cos he was battling for the title (which he won) and I was match reporter in the top 8. We discuss the field, note the size and overall weakness. Only players I recognize are Chris Ripple and Michael Patnik. I'm sure the rest are fine players and all, but there's something to be said for recognizability. Including the 3 late entries from Athens, Ohio, it's a 58 man PTQ. 6 rounds. No ringers. This must be what it feels like to play Magic in Manitoba.

Deck I played:

Trinket Doran (deck designer Jon Swearingen)

4 Birds of Paradise

4 Tarmogoyf

4 Dark Confidant

3 Doran

3 Gaddock Teeg

3 Trinket Mage

4 Vindicate

4 Cabal Therapy

2 Armadillo Cloak

2 Smother

2 Chrome Mox

1 Profane Command

1 Pithing Needle

1 Engineered Explosives

1 Sensei's Divining Top

1 Tormod's Crypt

4 Windswept Heath

3 Treetop Village

2 Forest

2 Swamp

2 Overgrown Tomb

1 Polluted Delta

1 Plains

1 Academy Ruins

1 Godless Shrine

1 Island

1 Hallowed Fountain

1 Temple Garden

4 Extirpate

3 Loxodon Hierarch

3 Mystic Enforcer

3 Indrik Stomphowler

1 Pithing Needle

1 Armadillo Cloak

Couldn't find the 2nd Polluted Delta, so added miser's Academy Ruins. Forgot my 60th card, so added miser's Command.

Rest is real hazy. I beat Dredge thanks to some epic luck on my part, beat a real good Doran player thanks to miscounting blockers and other extenuating circumstances involving a Chrome Mox and an Eternal Witness. Beat another deck, either Next Level or Previous Level or Wizards or something with Islands. I remember Venser. Does that help?

Don't really remember the rest specifically, only that a top-decked Platinum Angel in turn 4 of turns against U/G Tron in round 5 was the end for my top 8 hopes.

Matt and Josh were equally dream crushed. We all could've theoretically top 8'd had mother nature decided not to rain on our parade. Or freeze our parade over, as the case may be.

After the cut to top 8, I said bye to folks I knew and left. We argued for a while about whether to drive home or not (and stay at the local Super 8) since the highways were more like speed skating rinks. We decided to chance it. I some more bricks were... pooped. Luckily, Matt is a driver the likes of which hasn't been seen outside of Ice Road Truckers on History Channel and got us home in under 2 hours. So at 6 pm I got home, parked my car (Matt gave me the strength), walked into my room, and fell asleep.

I woke up for about 3 hours at like 5 a.m., but apparently 11 hours wasn't enough. I was still tired. 9ish hours later, wake up. Nice nap.

To review: this deck is insane. I didn't lose an actual match (other than to the weather gods) and the Tron match was locked up until crazy topdecked singleton got him there. If my only real losses were to 1-in-40 chance of hitting an out and to God hisself, then so be it. Definitely playing this at GP next week.

Unless another crazy natural disaster steals all my thunder.

See you all in Philly. I hope.

And miles to go before I sleep...

And miles to go before I sleep...
