Overview

The types of combos seen by myself (as a regular MWS player) are just getting out of hand. Cards are too powerful. Actually, it’s more like cards mixed with cards are too powerful. Before Marvel and DC Legends the game was a lot better but there were still cards thought to soon be banned or errata’d that never were. Even today’s Modern Age is out of control. I’ll take a look a bunch of cards and combos with my analysis of them, and most of them will have a decklist included. And I begin.

Quicksilly

Quicksilver, Inhuman by Marriage + Lots of Plot Twists with the Clause “While Attacking this Turn.”

Decklist:

  • 4 Lockjaw, Inhuman’s Best Friend
  • 4 Quicksilver, Inhuman By Marriage
  • 1 Tonaja, The Responsible One
  • 1 Human Torch, Sparky
  • 1 Dewoz, Dark Reflection
  • 1 Karnak, The Shatterer
  • 1 Quicksilver, Terrigenisis Rebirth
  • 4 The Great Refuge
  • 4 Mobilize
  • 2 Blue Area of the Moon
  • 2 The Substructure
  • 4 Final Decree
  • 4 Flying Kick
  • 4 The Royal Guard
  • 4 Crackshot
  • 4 It’s Slobberin’ Time
  • 4 Combat Reflexes
  • 4 Mob Mentality
  • 4 Kill or Be Killed
  • 3 Rabbit Fire

Requirements:

  • Getting Quicksilver: Lockjaw, Inhuman’s Best Friend, The Great Refuge, reservist.
  • Having enough ATK pumps: Over 30 cards in the usual deck are attack pumps.
  • No face-down resources: Terraform locations, Final Decree, reservists, The Substructure.

Safeguards:

  • Exhausting Quicksilver during an opponent’s attack step: Spider-Man, Webhead.
  • Prevented By: Nearly impossible on turns 2-3.
  • Replacing an opposing resource: Reality Gem, Have a Blast!.
  • Prevented By: Terraform locations, reservists, The Substructure, Final Decree, usually replacing into another ATK pump.
  • Stunning Quicksilver while he is attacking: Nasty Surprise, What Are Friends For?, Mental Blast.
  • Prevented By: Blue Area of the Moon, It’s Slobberin’ Time, The Royal Guard.

Effects: Endurance loss greater than double the ATK gained.

Comments: This is the absolute lowest in Vs System. Abusing Quicksilver has already been proven as possible as he has won countless city champs and numerous PC’s. I would have banned Quicksilver or errata’d him very long ago.

Possible Errata Text:

Free -- Ready Quicksilver and he cannot cause breakthrough this turn. Use only once per turn and only if you control no face-down resources.

Pass The Rock

Darkseid, The Omega + The Rock of Eternity

Decklist:

  • 4 Connie Web, Knight
  • 4 Sarge Steel, Knight
  • 4 Ahmed Samsarra, White King
  • 1 Dark Firestorm, Mockery
  • 4 Darkseid, Apokoliptian Oppressor
  • 3 Dark Warrior, Mockery
  • 4 Darkseid, The Omega
  • 1 Dark Kryptonian Dark Superboy, Mockery
  • 1 Darkseid, Apokolips Now
  • 1 Darkseid, Nemesis
  • 1 Galactus, Devourer of Worlds
  • 1 Onslaught, Psionic Spawn of Xavier and Magneto
  • 4 Enemy of My Enemy
  • 4 Brother I Satellite
  • 4 Checkmate Safe House, Team-Up
  • 3 The Rock of Eternity
  • 1 Ancient Throne
  • 4 All Hail Darkseid!
  • 4 Pathetic Attempt
  • 4 Chilly Reception
  • 3 Lord of Apokolips

Requirements:

  • Darkseid, The Omega: 4 copies, 4 Enemy of My Enemy.
  • The Rock of Eternity: 3 copies, Ahmed Samsarra, White King.
  • Getting to turn 6: DEF pumps, Darkseid, Apokoliptian Oppressor, Chilly Reception.
  • An opposing face-up, non-Team-Up resource: None.

Safeguards:

  • Replace your face-up resource: Have a Blast!.
  • Prevented By: Substitute. (Will give you another copy of The Rock of Eternity)
  • Replace The Rock of Eternity in response: Have a Blast!.
  • Prevented By: Pathetic Attempt, Ahmed Samsarra.
  • Win by turn 6: Lots of attack pumps.
  • Prevented by: Darkseid, Apokoliptian Oppressor, Chilly Reception.
  • Control JSA characters: Play a JSA deck.
  • Prevented By: None.

Effects: Your opponent will have each character he controls exhausted as his attack step starts, making it nearly impossible for him to attack.

Comments: I’ve been hit by this combo on numerous occasions. I have yet to get around it, although one time I played Pathetic Attempt to negate Darkseid, The Omega’s effect. It looked like he was going to have all of his characters exhausted from The Rock of Eternity, but instead he just substituted in another Darkseid. I think that The Rock of Eternity could use a good errata.

Possible Errata Text:

At the start of your attack step if the Rock of Eternity is in it‘s owner's resource row, ready each JSA character you control that was exhausted as your attack step started and exhaust each other character you control.

Copycat Burn

Professor X, World’s Most Powerful Telepath + Rogue, Power Absorption + Mimic, Exile

Decklist:

  • 4 Jean Grey, Teen Telepath
  • 4 Gambit, Swamp Rat
  • 4 Morph, Exile
  • 4 Rogue, Power Absorption
  • 1 Emma Frost, Ice Queen
  • 4 Psylocke, Second Skin
  • 4 Mimic, Exile
  • 3 Professor X, World’s Most Powerful Telepath
  • 1 Jean Grey, Phoenix Force
  • 4 Mobilize
  • 4 Nasty Surprise
  • 3 Children of the Atom
  • 4 To Me, My X-Men
  • 4 Only Human
  • 2 Cerebro
  • 3 Xavier’s Institute of HigherLearning
  • 4 Level 12 Intelligence
  • 4 Against All Odds

Requirements:

  • Professor X, World‘s Most Powerful Telepath: 3 copies, 4 Mobilize, 2 Cerebro, 3 Xavier’s Institute of Higher Learning.
  • Getting to turn 7: DEF pumps, Psylocke, Second Skin, Level 12 Intelligence, Only Human.
  • Keeping Character’s Alive: Taking Morph, Exile’s Activate, Children of the Atom, Psylocke Second Skin, DEF Pumps.

Safeguards:

  • KO or don‘t recruit a character with cost 5 or less: Easy provided you know what your opponent is trying to do.
  • Prevented By: Never attacking.

Effects: 100+ endurance loss.

Comments: I’ve seen this combo go off numerous times. The plan is too have the initiative on turn 7, then you attack Psylocke (assuming you hit your curve) into your opponent’s 5-drop. You then activate Professor X target ting that 5-drop, then use Mimic and Rogue to activate on that 5-drop also. Additionally, you can play Nasty Surprise on your opponent’s defender to increase burn damage and play To Me, My X-Men for additional burns.

Possible Errata Text:

Loyalty [Activate] à Exhaust target ready character with cost 5 or less. Its controller loses endurance equal to it’s ATK.

Wylde‘s Fire

Dazzler, Rock Star + Numerous Characters + Fastball Special/Gambit, Swamp Rat

Decklist:

  • 4 Owen Mercer Captain Boomerang Jr., Prodigal Son
  • 2 Technocrat, Geoffrey Barron
  • 1 Halo, Gabrielle Doe
  • 1 Faust, Sebastian Faust
  • 1 Thunder, Anissa Pierce
  • 3 Archangel, Angel
  • 1 Blink, Exile
  • 1 Beast, Quick Thinker
  • 1 Lockheed, Saurian Sidekick
  • 1 Changeling, Kevin Sidney
  • 1 Shadowcat, Phase Shifter
  • 1 Jubilee, Mallrat
  • 1 Domino, Neena Thurman
  • 1 Wild Child, Age of Apocalypse
  • 2 Wylde, Charlie Wylde
  • 1 Looker, Emily Briggs
  • 4 Dazzler, Rock Star
  • 2 Gambit, Swamp Rat
  • 1 Longshot, Hero of Mojoworld
  • 1 Sabretooth, Age of Apocalypse
  • 1 Kimiyo Hoshi Dr. Light, Sunburst
  • 4 Birthing Chamber
  • 4 X-Corp Amsterdam, X-Corp
  • 1 Cerebro
  • 1 Xavier’s Institute of Higher Learning
  • 1 Worthington Industries, X-Corp
  • 4 Recruiting Drive
  • 4 Time Breach
  • 4 Fastball Special
  • 4 X-Men United, Team-Up
  • 1 Blackbird Blue

Requirements:

  • Dazzler, Rock Star + Numerous Characters: Time Breach, Recruiting Drive, Worthington Industries, Cerebro, Birthing Chamber.
  • Fastball Special/Gambit Swamp Rat: Recruiting Drive, Time Breach, Birthing Chamber, Technocrat.

Safeguards:

  • KO’ing/Stunning All Characters: Total Anarchy or Spectral Slaughter.
  • Prevented By: Completely avoidable with Owen Mercer.
  • Negate Stuns: Pathetic Attempt or Bat Got Your Tongue? work great.

Effects: Lethal amounts of burn damage.

Comments: Now this combo’s a little more rare. By using Wylde and Dazzler to team attack with a bunch of other characters you cause huge burn damage, then you can use Fastball Special or Gambit to stun the defender. The attackers will then ready and the burn damage will be able to be repeated. I’ve tested this deck out through MWS and it very often works.

Possible Errata Text:

Play only during your attack step.

To play, exhaust two X-Men characters in your front row.

Stun target non-defending character.

One Name to Rule Them All

Bizarro + Bizarro World + Four Freedoms Plaza

Decklist:

  • 4 Connie Web, Knight
  • 4 Alexander Luthor, Duplicitous Doppelganger
  • 4 Black Thorn, Elizabeth Thorne
  • 4 Ahmed Samsarra, White King
  • 1 Christopher Smith Peacemaker, Obsessed Outlaw
  • 4 Bizarro, ME AM BIZARRO #1
  • 1 Abe Sapien, ICTHYO SAPIEN
  • 1 Basil Karlo Clayface, Slimy Shapeshifter
  • 2 Huntress, Reluctant Queen
  • 1 Bizarro, Dark Mirror
  • 1 Bizarro, Bizarro World’s Finest
  • 4 Bizarro World
  • 4 Brother I Satellite
  • 3 Checkmate Safe House, Team-Up
  • 3 Four Freedoms Plaza
  • 1 Brother Eye
  • 1 Soul World
  • 4 Berserker Rage
  • 4 Enemy of My Enemy
  • 3 From the Darkness
  • 2 Healing Factor
  • 1 Swift Escape
  • 2 Juggernaut’s Helmet
  • 1 Steel Girder

Requirements:

  • Bizarro, ME AM BIZARRO #1: Alexander Luthor, Enemy of My Enemy.
  • Bizarro World + Four Freedoms Plaza: Ahmed Samsarra, Brother I Satellite.

Safeguards:

  • KO Ahmed Samsarra: Blackheart usually would do the trick.
  • Prevented By: Swift Escape.

Effects: Infinite Search.

Comments: Bizarro is absolutely nuts. The current text for his world grants him all names and identities, allowing him everything. This makes him non-unique to himself as well, allowing for a curve of:

  1. Alexander Luthor/Connie Web
  2. Black Thorne
  3. Ahmed Samsarra
  4. Bizarro (with Juggernaut’s Helmet)
  5. Bizarro + Steel Girder
  6. Bizarro (6-drop, also with Juggernaut’s Helmet)

Because of the infinite search given by Four Freedoms Plaza and Ahmed Samsarra, this deck is consistent beyond belief. Usually the 4-drop Bizarro is equipped with a Juggernaut’s Helmet and uses a few Berserker Rage’s for the win on turn 4.

Possible Errata Text:

Flip only if you control a Revenge Squad character.

When you fiip Bizarro World, choose a name. Characters you control named Bizarro have that name and identity.

The amount of crazy combos today are just out of hand. I really think simple errata’s like the one’s I’ve thought up would help the game. I don’t think it’s right that people can win games on turn 3 with Quicksilver or get to search their deck for 3 cards each turn with Four Freedoms Plaza.

Until next time,

Wiiman

As of the newest version of the Vs System Comprehensive Rules one of these many combos have been solved. Bizarro’s infinite search capabilities are no more. Check rule 208.1b for specifics.
