The tone of Magic and using Imagination
Posted On 02/02/2008 22:57:14 by Boggsey - Read 130 time(s)

So I have been in a slump for a while on what kind of deck to build. To me, the Type Two environment is limited at the moment. I see the same stuff over and over when playing Friday nights. I am very big on individuality, and when I see someone make a deck from their own imagination I congradulate them on being different.

I started playing magic when I was a freshman in Highschool back in 2001. I started playing because a teacher of mine played. I would build 90 card decks stuff with the biggest creatures out there. Other kids in school would do the same thing, and when two of these decks would go against each other, it was like a battle of the Titans. After school on Fridays we would all get together and play with our decks we worked on throughout the week. I loved the feeling I got playing these games, Magic to me had a whole different tone back then.

It was sometime later that I found out that Comic Shop Plus in Newark, Ohio hosted Friday Night Magic. So me and some friends headed up there to test our "god" decks. We seemed to kick the crap out of each other good, we were sure to dominate other peoples decks. When we got there things were a little confusing to us. New rules such as "The Stack", all the steps, and this and that were introduced. I went against decks that were like my anti-christ. This was a valuable experience and a bad one all in the same time. This new competitive style of play and seriousness brought a whole new meaning to me for Magic and somewhat robbed me of that extra fun feeling.

I have tried countless times to sit down and really build a deck in the old style of "school" play, but with better mechanics behind them...can't do it. Since I have been playing in the tournaments for over three years, my mindset on certain cards has changed. I remember when my friend came over one day all excited about a new deck he built. We sat down at the kitchen table and began to play. About two hours later he had over 1,000,000 creatures, I had over 1,000,000 creatures and we were at a stand still. I ended up coming out on top with a little card called Overrun. But nevertheless, that was perhaps the most fun I have ever had. We were both laughing the whole time and it wasn't about winning for us as much as it is to me now...it was about the cards themselves and the total randomness of a hundred card deck.

These I build my decks with more focus to mana cost, power, and total effectiveness. I have net-decked a few times, and yeah I did good...but I would have been happier those times winning with a deck of my own creation. And I think this whole blog boils down to a few things really: Magic is about fun and imagination. Why can't you have those two in a constructed tournament? I am hear to say you can. Stick with what you love and what makes you happy. If you want to run huge creatures, then do it. Just really find a way to make it work, and that is the challenge...but a challenge can be fun in itself.

Currently I am working on a mono green Treefolk/Shaman/Elf deck. It has more a lean toward Shaman using Wolf-Skull Shaman and Leaf Crown Elder. I still have some adjusting to do with the mana acceleration, but once I get that fixed it will be a fun and interesting deck for me to play and my opponent to witness in action.

Well, that is it for my first blog on here. Until next time:

I actually created a format with my friends. It is 5 color Themed/Sub theme. To play you must have at least 2 of each basic land in your deck, a card of each color, five multi colored cards, and at least one 5 color card. The deck must have a main theme (Ex:Slivers) and a sub theme (Ex: Battlemages). The Jitte is not aloud in this format because that card in itself takes the fun factor out of a lot of games. The thing is, it is so hard to get a good casual game going between matches at tourneys and since we all have hectic schedules and I live far from civilization, it is hard to simply hang-out and play.

I know what you mean about the game changing.  What you can do, is find a format that is more casual and fun, like pauper or Elder Dragon Highlander.
